Conduits, or buried conduits, are the general term used to describe a conduit which passes through the ground and is connected to an outlet at the surface, such as a water line or a sewer line. These conduits are typically cast in concrete or other hard material and placed in the ground in an open trench. One problem with conventional conduits is that there is no way to seal them from the elements such as water, corrosives and the like. Also, they do not easily lend themselves to providing cable passageways. In one known approach to this problem, a molded plastic pipe is used which is cast in the ground and has some type of lid or cover. These pipe-like covers are somewhat unwieldy and are difficult to handle. These covers, once installed, are prone to pop out of the ground, creating a nuisance for those repairing or maintaining the conduits. Another problem is that each conduit is connected to a main conduit. Thus, when a main conduit is disconnected, for example, to repair or replace it, it is necessary to cut the main conduit off, dig up the underground main conduit and pull the cut-off conduit out of the ground. In many instances, this is done at night because it is difficult to dig during the day. Because the conduit extends through the ground, it is difficult to know exactly where the main conduit is located. Sometimes the underground main conduit and the other cut-off conduit are not easily reconnected because the cut-off conduit must be located and then reconnected. This can be a tedious and time consuming operation. In another known approach to this problem, a manifold is formed in the ground by a series of pipe sections connected together. Each
